Creating and Managing Templates for Custom Post Types in Spectra One

With Spectra One’s Full Site Editing (FSE) capabilities, you can create and customize templates for your custom post types directly from the WordPress Site Editor.

This guide outlines the steps to create templates for custom post types and custom taxonomies.

How to Create and Manage Templates

You can follow below steps to create and customize templates for your custom post types directly from the WordPress Site Editor.

1. Open the Site Editor

In your WordPress admin area, navigate to Appearance > Editor. This will open the Full Site Editing (FSE) interface.

2. Create a New Template

In the Navigation Sidebar (the dark grey menu), select Templates.

Click on the plus icon (+) to add a new template. This action opens a scrollable modal window with a list of template options you can create.

Note: If a template for your custom post type or taxonomy already exists, it will not appear in this list. You would need to edit or delete the existing template.

3. Choose Template Type

Under this step, select Template Type. You can create the following types of templates:

  • Single Item Template: A template for displaying individual items of the custom post type.
  • Custom Post Type Archive: A template for listing all items of the custom post type.
  • Custom Taxonomy Archive: A template for displaying items associated with a specific custom taxonomy.

Example – Single Item Template:

  • Click on the “Single item: Book” option to create a template for individual book items.
  • You will be prompted to choose between:
  • For All Items: A template that applies to all items of the custom post type.
  • For a Specific Item: A template for a particular item.
  • If you select For a Specific Item, you will be presented with a list of saved items from your custom post type. Choose one to create a template specifically for that item.

4. Design and Customize the Template

  • After selecting the template type, you can use the block editor to design your template.
  • Add and configure blocks to display content from your custom post type or taxonomy, such as Post Title, Post Content, and any custom fields using ACF blocks if available.
  • In addition, you can customize the appearance of your template using the styling options available in the Site Editor.

5. Publish

Once you are satisfied with the design, publish the template. It will be applied to the specified custom post type or taxonomy items.

Using the Full Site Editing features of Spectra One, you can create and manage templates for your custom post types and taxonomies efficiently. This approach offers flexibility and control over how your content is presented.
